Schanell Woodson is a security guard at Germantown Friends School, where she is most known for her energy, happiness, and bright bow. I spoke with Woodson about why she likes to connect with students and what she has observed while on the job.

What have you noticed about the dynamic between different grades?

I've noticed y'all all act the same as far as being kids, but you can tell the mature side, and of course, the kid side. Y'all are just sweethearts to me, so I really can't put a pin into it.

Can you describe how you feel when you listen to us talking with our friends?

Most of the time I laugh, depending on the situation. The conversations that I do hear bring me back to when I went to school and how me and my friends or my siblings used to be.

What do you like most about observing the students?

The fun y'all have. Y'all have so many things you all do, like, the different events and stuff. I love to see it. It gives y'all something to do, and not every school has that.

What is something that students might do that is a pet peeve for you?

Not much. Just crossing when I don't know, or if I told you to wait, and you just might not have heard me, because sometimes I am not loud enough. Going out without me knowing freaks me out. Other than that, nothing really.

How can the students do a better job of connecting with you and the other security guards?

Just talk to me, I'm willing to help anybody out. I'm very nice. I don't mind helping anybody if I can.

I just have to ask, why did you decide to add the bow to your outfit?

I decided to wear a bow because it gave [my]  uniform some razzle-dazzle.
