In her first major change in the administrative structure, Dana Weeks has appointed Upper School Principal Rita Goldman to the newly created position, Associate Head of School. Michael Williamson, the former Deanof Faculty and current art teacher will become the Interim Upper School principal.
Goldman has held several jobs in her years at GFS. She is a veteran administrator of admissions, college guidance and multicultural affairs.
“I know the school inside and out,” Goldman said, which was one of the main reasons Weeks chose her for the position.
Most of Goldman’s new duties will be internal. She will oversee all the academic personnel and work closely with Weeks on the academic program and the vision for the school.
She will be helping the department heads to develop new academic programs. “We are in the process of developing an international program,” Goldman said. “We have more international students who are interested in the school.”
Goldman is not changing offices and will stay as a college counselor, but “will miss upper school life,” she said.
Williamson will fill Goldman’s role temporarily. When Williamson received an email from Weeks asking him to meet with her. “I wondered what I did wrong,” he said. In the meeting Weeks offered the Interim Principal position to Williamson. “It was a complete surprise to me,” he said.
“I had to really think about it,” Williamson said. “I was really happy teaching drawing and painting and art history, and having this very intimate relationship with my students.”
He decided to take the position because he wanted to support Weeks and provide stability during a year when the Lower and Middle School Principals are leaving.
Williamson is very glad that Goldman will be the Associate Head of School and said, “I intend to return to teaching at the end of fulfilling the role as Interim Principal.”
